The rumors are true. This spring Midland Antiques Market will move from its gritty, funky and generous downtown Indianapolis location to a new spot, somewhere up north. Too bad, since I think part of Midland’s appeal has been its unpretentious hipness, a vibe that will be a challenge to duplicate in its new surroundings.
Oh well. That’s business.
While I don’t know how interested I’ll be in heading up to its new location (it’s hard to beat my current 1/4 mile drive) I can still celebrate it’s current eclectic mix of just about everything any designer might need–a magician’s hat of funky home goods.
The homey and sweet lines of this chandelier would make an easy fit for a clapboarded cottage or a lyrical foil in a sleek dining room, especially if it were painted.
I have my eye on this table as part of a 1960s Palm Springs feel Dave and I are thinking of working into a guest bedroom.
Comfy, even if it is bulky. I can see still see this crewel pattern (I love crewel) in an Anthropologie-inspired bedroom.
I have no idea what I might do with a car shaped lamp made of Light Bright pegs, but how could anyone not love it?
Well, so long Midland. As a neighbor you were great fun. I’d wish you well in your new digs, but selfishly I hope we downtowners will be seeing you again sooner rather than later.

Troy, I think you oughta snag that table right away. It’s PERFECT. What a drag. I thought they were just adding another location, not closing altogether. I just don’t understand.
I’m kind of sad we didn’t go to it while it was so convenient! We picked chocolate over antiques the day we got there early, so I guess I can still stand behind that decision.
I loved my Light Bright more than any toy. So fun.
i hope it hasn’t packed up before i get back to indy for one last visit.
I love “window shopping” anything from Anthropologie and can see why you love that chair. Its so them.
I still have my old Light Bright…love it! My nieces have the new version called the cube and it doesn’t hold a candle to my old.
Is that design really called crewel? I had no idea. My parents’ had two bathrooms (in different houses) with crewel wallpaper. It was kind of… a bit much.
Crewel actually refers to the application method (embroidered wool on a design that was drawn or otherwise put on a fabric). Crewel is at least a thousand year-old technique, but for most people I know it conjures patterns from the 70s when it, like a lot of other applied needlework, was popular. Re: wallpaper. Crewel is typically done in curved patterns though, it isn’t impossible that a crewel design was used to inspire a wallpaper like the one at your folks’ house. Or was it actually embroidered wallpaper?! If so, that could be really interesting!
It wasn’t embroidered, but the pattern on that chair is extremely close to the old bathroom wallpaper. They also had sofa pillows made from the same pattern, and had a tile backsplash (above the stove) painted to match. I’ll have to ask my mom if there are pictures of any of it so you can tell me if it’s crewel or just plain cruel (sorry, couldn’t resist).
oh no! It’s one of Faith’s favorite places! She loves browsing and saves her pennies to buy “pretty things” and how nice it was for us to take a walk there, just the two of us. Oh, this is hard to bear!
But I must ask – Claudia and I came here to look at the evidence of Claire’s misdeed and Claudia wants to know, “did Mr. Troy make another cake after Claire ate the first one he made?” so there you are – the burning question, answer eagerly awaited by your 3-year-old friend.
Naomi, hopefully Faith is old enough that she’ll be able to remember your great walks to and through Midland when she gets older. I bet another store, just as fun, will open up within walking distance of our hood soon.
Claudia, I thought about baking another one, but I already had planned a visit to a friend’s house for later that day. I’ve learned never to bake when I’m frustrated anyway. Good news though. Claire only ate part of the cake and because the person I was baking it for is such a good friend, she didn’t mind me cutting off the part that Claire had munched on and giving her the rest.
